playonline activation code =/

well I'm new to playing final fantasy XI (i am still to play) and I'm having problems with my "unused" playonline registration code =[
I've had the game for a while but i couldn't play it as i lost my internet just after i bought the game.
so i finally got to play it and apparently my playonline registration code is invalid (it was still in its plastic wrapping when i tried to register)
i looked at the "welcome home" event but for that to work i would have had to have been a customer to start with =/
would anyone be able to help me as i don't know what to do (and i would rather not buy the game again)
